While we were at Pixar in Emeryville, CA a few weeks ago to get a first-look at their upcoming new original movie, HOPPERS, Jordie sat down with its director Daniel Chong and producer Nicole Grindle to ask a question about AI and its use in the creative process at Pixar.
“I worked in 2D (hand-drawn) animation before CG (computer graphics) was developed and implemented. I remember that we were all really worried about what CG would mean for animators, and a majority of those 2D animators were able to adapt. I hope would be that AI would become an artistic tool and that it’ll not take the place of the human element.”
Added Chong, “I think what AI starts to remove is this feeling that great art takes a lot of work. I hope people can start to understand that if you want to make something really good that connects with people, it’s really hard to do.”
